The Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) is proud to announce Ben Eckert as the 2025 AUF Sportsperson of the Year, recognising his outstanding achievements, leadership, and exemplary conduct within the sport of freediving.

At the Australian Pool National Championships in Cairns, Ben claimed the National Pool Champion (All-Around) title and set three new national records across dynamic pool disciplines. Among these achievements was a standout performance: a 250-metre bi-fins swim. Equally remarkable is Ben’s unbroken record of white cards throughout his entire competitive career. Maintaining a perfect white-card record reflects exceptional mastery, discipline, and adherence to freediving’s highest standards of safety and fairness.

Ben’s influence extends far beyond his personal results. As a respected coach and mentor, he has created a high-performance yet supportive training culture within his club—one that prioritises safety, teamwork, and steady athletic progression. His guidance has directly contributed to major athlete milestones, including Emily Powley, who became the 2025 Women’s National Champion under his coaching.

Ben is also admired throughout Australia’s freediving community for the humility and balance he brings to the sport. His decision to pause competition to support his young family—and the thoughtful, disciplined way he returned—reflect the integrity of someone who leads by example both in and out of the pool. He is celebrated not only as a champion but as a mate whose presence strengthens the sport.
