The Australian Freediving Association and the Cairns Coast Freedivers Club will host the AFA CMAS National Pool Championships from Fri 14 to Mon 17 November, 2025 at Tobruk Memorial Pool in Cairns. This competition is conducted under CMAS rules and is open to all AFA members regardless of their nationality. It will not be a world record status competition. There is a capacity of approximately 60 athletes for the event, and the inlist will be set on a first-come, first-served basis.

Competition Format

This year’s Nationals will include all CMAS disciplines: STA, DNF, DYN, DYNB as well as speed disciplines (2×50, 4×50, 8×50). Importantly, this year’s Nationals will include the sport of Parafreediving for the first time. Disabled freedivers are particularly invited to register and compete. The CMAS rules for Parasport Freediving and Finswimming, regulating disability classifications as well as rules, can be found here.

Overall rankings and the title of National Champion will be determined by the top aggregate points across all four disciplines (STA-DYN-DYNB-DNF). The rules for the different rankings and medals at the competition are described below. For athletes that wish to compete in CMAS speed disciplines (2×50, 4×50, 8×50), that will be a separate ranking.

Separate rankings will be calculated for the various CMAS age groups: Juniors (15-17 years old), Seniors (18-49 years old), Masters (50 years old and above, subdivided in Masters 1 (50-59), Masters 2 (60-69), Masters 3 (70 and above)).

Consistent with previous years, the overall competition prizes and national title will be based on the best aggregate points across all four disciplines. This means that an athlete must do one dive in each discipline to be competitive in the overall rankings. The points system will be based on the standard CMAS method, [details tba].

There will be an overall ranking with awards for the top 3 places in both the Men’s and Women’s events, which is open to all nationalities. The competition will also have an Australian overall ranking to determine the national champions, which is only open to Australian citizens.

For both the Men’s and Women’s events, medals will be awarded to the top three performances in each of the four disciplines. Rankings will be based on CMAS rules. If an athlete does multiple dives in a single discipline, their ranking will be given by their best result.

FAQs

If you have any questions which are not answered below, email us at committee@australianfreediving.org.

All competition days for dynamic will be in a 50m pool.

  • If you are an Australian citizen living overseas, you will need to take out full membership with the AFA to participate in a competition held in Australia.
  • If you are an Australian citizen currently using our Australian Athlete Overseas membership, please email us and we can provide you with a discount code.
  • If you are not an Australian citizen and do not live in Australia, you may use the Competition Membership option on the registration payment page to provide you with insurance for the event. Please note that you must be a member of your country’s national federation affiliated with CMAS to use this option.

If you are already an AUF member and wish to join the AFA, please contact us with your AUF membership details (including expiry date) and the type of AFA membership you wish to have (unaffiliated, or club). The AFA will provide you with a discount code so you do not pay the federal insurance fees twice.

If you do not have prior experience in freediving competition, the best approach will be to join your local AFA-affiliated club and spend time training with them. At the start of the competition, there will be a detailed competition briefing for all athletes that covers the rules. However, it is best to practice before the event to become familiar with small details like the surface protocol.

There is a capacity limit for this event, meaning that recreational grade will only occur if there is space (assessment to be made in October). However, the competition format will give you multiple opportunities to get a PB and there will be many people at the competition who will happily give you support and advice. We often have first-timers at our Nationals and feedback from them is overwhelmingly positive, so we encourage everyone to sign up to the main event and have fun with it!

Yes, there is a hard capacity limit of just over 60 athletes. However, if we receive overwhelming interest and signups before October, we will explore the option of running an additional competition lane to accommodate more.

Yes, there will be a place where athletes can check in with a judge to show their passport/national ID and medical form for the whole competition.

There is no official/recommended accommodation for the event. However, the AFA has been able to secure discounts from these establishments:

  • North Cove Waterfront Suites: 10min walk from Tobruk Pool. 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments (10 available at the time of writing). 10% discount with code AFA2025 when booking for at least 3 nights between 12 and 19 Nov 2025. Works out to between $60 and $120 per person per night, depending on how you share.
  • More options may come.
