Competition Format

This year’s pool nationals has a more flexible format than in previous years to promote general participation and allow for specialists to pursue national records in dynamic events. If athletes do not want to do all four disciplines they can choose any dynamic event on the three days they are scheduled. For example, if an athlete wishes to do three bifins performances over those three days, it will be permitted.

The AFA especially encourages new divers or those crossing over from other underwater sports to come and participate, as they can pick their favourite dyamic event and have three opportunities to improve their performance and ranking. For those who wish to compete in the overall classification and for the title of National Champion, overall event rankings will be determined by the top aggregate points across all four disciplines (STA-DYN-DYNB-DNF).

The rules for the different rankings and medals at the competition are described below.

Consistent with previous years, the overall competition prizes and national title will be based on the best aggregate points across all four disciplines. This means that an athlete must do one dive in each discipline to be competitive in the overall rankings. The points system will be based on the standard AIDA method, weighted by the current Australian record. For example, the current Australian Men’s static record is 8:01, which is equivalent to a score of 96.2 under AIDA rules. If an athlete in the Men’s competition achieved a white card for a 7:00 static, they would receive an AIDA score of 82. The total points awarded for that dive would be 82/96.2 = 0.87, or 87.3%. This method of calculating the points ensures that each discipline has equal importance when creating the aggregate scores.

There will be an overall ranking with awards for the top 3 places in both the Men’s and Women’s events, which is open to all nationalities. The competition will also have an Australian overall ranking to determine the national champions, which is only open to Australian citizens.

For both the Men’s and Women’s events, medals will be awarded to the top three performances in each of the four disciplines. Rankings will be based on AIDA rules. If an athlete does multiple dives in a single discipline, their ranking will be given by their best result.

Important information for participants

Under AIDA rules, you must bring the following documents with you at the on-site registration prior to the competition start:

  • Passport or official national identity card that states the nationality you are competing under
  • A signed “medical certificate of non contraindication to freediving” written in English (see rule 4.1.3.3). The certificate must be signed and dated by a medical doctor. It may not be older than one year, and an athlete may not sign their own certificate. Furthermore, the contact details of the doctor must be present on the form. AIDA no longer has set medical forms. The last AIDA medical form may be downloaded here. The previous AIDA medical form may be downloaded here.

All competition days for dynamic will be in a 50m pool.

  • If you are an Australian citizen living overseas, you will need to take out full membership with the AFA to participate in a competition held in Australia.
  • If you are an Australian citizen currently using our Australian Athlete Overseas membership, please email us and we can provide you with a discount code.
  • If you are not an Australian citizen and do not live in Australia, you may use the Competition Membership option on the registration payment page to provide you with insurance for the event. Please note that you must be a member of your country’s AIDA National to use this option.

If you are already an AUF member and wish to join the AFA, please contact us with your AUF membership details (including expiry date) and the type of AFA membership you wish to have (unaffiliated, or club). The AFA will provide you with a discount code so you do not pay the federal insurance fees twice.

If you do not have prior experience in freediving competition, the best approach will be to join your local AFA-affiliated club and spend time training with them. At the start of the competition, there will be a detailed competition briefing for all athletes that covers the rules. However, it is best to practice before the event to become familiar with small details like the surface protocol.

There is a capacity limit for this event, meaning that recreational grade will only occur if there is space (assessment to be made in April). However, the competition format will give you multiple opportunities to get a PB and there will be many people at the competition who will happily give you support and advice. We often have first-timers at our Nationals and feedback from them is overwhelmingly positive, so we encourage everyone to sign up to the main event and have fun with it!

Yes, there is a hard capacity limit of just over 60 athletes. However, if we receive overwhelming interest and signups before April, we will explore the option of running an additional competition lane to accommodate more.

Yes, there will be a place where athletes can check in with a judge to show their passport/national ID and medical form for the whole competition.
